A continuación les ofrecemos datos curiosos sobre el "titán de las manos duras" Ray Barretto:

Nacio el 29 de abril en 1929, en Brooklyn, Nueva York. Sus padres eran de origen Puertorriqueńo. Su apellido era Barreto—la "T" adicional fue ańadida accidentalmente por una enfermera en el hospital donde nació. Se enlisto en ejercito a los 17 ańos de edad Su música favorita era el Jazz Americano, y su artista preferido era Dizzy Gillespie, cual inspiro al joven Barretto con su canción "Manteca" la cual utilizo al conguero Chano Ponzo. En la década de los 50, Barretto substituye al afamado conguero Mongo Santamaría en la orquesta de Tito Puente—con quien Barretto graba el contundente disco Mambo Mania. Barretto fue al conguero de mas demanda en Nueva York, trabajando para leyendas del Jazz como: Cal Tjader, Charlie Parker y Cannonball Adderley. El primer disco de Barretto fue Charanga Moderna (1962) y le dio el súper éxito "El Watusi" la canción logro colocarse en las listas Top 20 del mercado Norte Americano, un raro acontecimiento para un artista Latino en los ańos 60. 1967: Firma como artista exclusivo de La Fania 1972: Lanza el disco Que Viva La Música, la grabación marca el final de la orquesta original de Barretto, su cantante Adalberto Santiago y el resto de la banda se fueron para formar la agrupación Tipica 73. Por su puesto, fue miembro de las Estrellas de La Fania (Fania All Stars) Fallecio el 17 de febrero del 2006—se le consagra como el "Rey de La Manos Duras."

The following tidbits are fun facts and trivia about the great Ray Barretto!.




Ray Barretto was born April 29, 1929 in Brooklyn, New York, his family was of Puerto Rican decent.



His original family name is Barreto—the extra T was a misspelling by the staff at the hospital where he was born.
Enrolled in the US Army at age 17
He loved Latin music, and American Jazz, one his favorite Jazz artists was Dizzy Gillespie, he particularly loved Gillespie’s song “Manteca” which featured the conguero Chano Ponzo.
During the 50’s Barretto substituted the all time great conguero Mongo Santamaria in the leyendary Tito Puente Orchestra and recorded Puente’s seminal mambo album Dance Mania
Barretto was a sought after session player, lending his skills to Jazz greats such as Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley and Cal Tjader,
Barretto’s first album was 1962’s Charanga Moderna, and scored the major hit “El Watusi” (the song was a huge hit for Barretto breaking into the coveted US Top 20 chart and reaching gold status in sales—a rare and significant achievement for a Latin act in the US.
Joins Fania in 1967
In 1972: releases the admired album Que Viva La Musica (Long Live Music) featuring Adalberto Santiago on vocals, the album is regarded as a landmark achievement in pop music. That same year the classic Barretto orchestra line up left to form the band Tipica 73.
Was a member of the famed Fania All Stars.
Passed away in February 17th 2006, he is still known as the King of The Hard Hands for his unmatched skills at the congas.
