GAPPY RANKS " PUT THE STEREO ON " - ALBUM IN STORES AUGUST 23RD

Greensleeves & Peckings Records present:

GAPPY RANKS " PUT THE STEREO ON " - ALBUM IN STORES AUGUST 23RD

Included " Heaven in her eyes ", " Put the stereo on ", " Mountain top ", " Pumpkin Belly ", " Happiest day " & many more ..

Gappy Ranks born and grown Harlesden NW10. Father Jamaican, Mother Dominican, a good combination like Rice & Peas. Early support and recognition of this rising young talent who had made his studio debut with the Ruff Cutt band aged 11 came from local sound system operators and pirate radio stations and soon led to his link up and studio baptism with Stonebridge stars Suncycle Crew. The embers were soon burning and the young artist next landed a series of killer link ups with the likes of Kray Twinz, Twista and MC Lethal B. It was his initial hit for the legendary Peckings crew "Mountain Top" that really lit the blue touch paper and when the follow up "Heaven In My Eyes" bust international Gappy found himself in the driving seat of an unstoppable rocket to stardom. “Stinking Rich” & “Rising Out The Ghetto” consolidated his success, his impact on the dancehall world mirroring fellow Londoner Amy Winehouses revolutionising of the world R&B scene. The release of his eagerly awaited Greensleeves album "Put The Stereo On" ups the ante to another level, the album sees Gappy completing his project with the Peckings crew, producers of Bitty McLeans classic “On Bond Street” album and like that best selling set “Put The Stereo On” is launched on authorised versions from Studio One, Treasure Isle & Bunny Lee. Whether it's "as good as old" gems like the title track "Put The Stereo On" (a record so in-demand the dancehall government have had to step in to authorize it's immediate release), the straight to the heart romantic beat of "Happiest Day Of My Life" or the awesome word, sound & power of “Thy Shall Love” Gappy has it all under lock and key, he can sing like Tarrus and spit lyrics like Kartel and displays this stunning versatility both on stage and in the studio. "Put The Stereo On”" is already being touted as reggae album of 2010 but it's ambition doesn't stop there, it's a genre defining classic with a pre-release buzz that is already enjoying high profile reach outside of the traditional market. Gappy is also proving to be one of the most popular live draws on the planet, headlining shows across Europe, Asia & the USA and is currently lined up for upcoming festival appearances at Glastonbury, Rototom & the Atlanta Summer Festival. Gappy Ranks is clearing some space on his mantelpiece for the awards and trophies that are sure to come his way, our reward is the music and if you love music, you will love Gappy Ranks!

This week, we begin with a total gem called Dj Lubi Presents Salsa Dura that includes La Excelencia, La 33, Cheo Linares and more. Kokolo's Love International dishes up deep Afro sounds with some Latin flavor, and the amazing compilation of Peruvian MAG tracks Gózalo 1 is now available digitally. Henry Brun's terrific 20th Anniversary album is now here, and also be sure to check out Armando Peraza's Wild Thing that features Johnny Pacheco and Cal Tjader. We've also posted John Child's mini-bio of Chocolate Armenteros, and this week brings us not one, but two fantastic new Playlists: DJ Dwight "Chocolate" Escobar Direct From Australia and Andy Harlow's Sublime Charanga Sound! Finally, down below, you'll find our farewell tribute to the late Pablo Lebron, the great lead singer of the New York salsa band the Lebron Brothers. Pablo passed away on July 13th, and will be missed by everyone who has ever heard him sing. Read on...

Dj Lubi Presents Salsa Dura

One of the UK's first and best known salsa DJs, Lubi Jovanovic, has kept ahead of the pack by always taking note of new Latin musical genres that have evolved over the years without losing sight of the classic sounds from the past. "Salsa Dura", or "hard salsa" when directly translated from Spanish, is Freestyle Records' first pure salsa CD compilation and its a killer! DJ Lubi has chosen 13 of the hardest hitting contemporary salsa tracks from across the globe, many of which are featured in his sets worldwide! Some are popular hits on the salsa scene, such as La Excelencia's 'La Lucha'. Others have never been released before, like the Santiago All Stars from Chile, whose 'No Cuentes' is a Freestyle Records exclusive! Most of the artists are from the US but there are also bands from Colombia (La-33), Holland (Our Latin Groove, Doble Jugada), Venezuela (Cheo Linares) and the UK (Snowboy). This compilation covers the full spectrum of salsa - from instrumental mambo flavour to Cuban rumba, retro sounding 1960s and 1970s tributes to contemporary sounds. As the saying goes, "all killers, no fillers." Whether you are a salsa aficionado, a DJ, dancer or newcomer to the music, we guarantee that DJ Lubi Presents: Salsa Dura will have something on it to make you smile!

Henry Brun and The Latin Playerz | 20th Anniversay

The new 20th Anniversary album features seven previously unreleased tracks! Conga dynamo Henry Brun, nicknamed "Mr. Ritmo" by his fans, lives by the authenticity, dynamics and "cadencia" of the music he plays. Born in the Bronx to Puerto Rican parents, Henry started playing congas at age seven. Upon their return to Puerto Rico, by the time he was eleven, he was playing professionally. While listening to and being influenced by Latin music pioneers such as Tito Puente, Patato, Buyú, Mongo and Candido, Henry developed his own unique style and technique on bongos and timbales.

Kokolo | Love International

In just a few years, KOKOLO's infectious blend of social commentary, charisma and musical appeal has taken them from the tangled streets of their native New York to the world's stage, firmly establishing them as premier innovators in rhythm-based music, and drawing scores of afro-beat lovers, funk heads, salsa aficionados, dance club punters and jazz connoisseurs along the way. KOKOLO (a name derived from Spanish-Harlem slang used to describe hardcore followers of afro music) formed in May 2001, at a time when the Big Apple's nu afro-beat scene began to take shape. Formed by lead singer and songwriter Ray Lugo and English trombonist Chris Morrow, the duo soon blossomed to eight core members, and within two months became mainstays at New York's venue for the avant-garde, the Knitting Factory. Turning to the DIY ethic of his formative punk days, Lugo self-produced and released the octet's urgent "Fuss and Fight" debut through a deal with England's Afrokings label in 2002. . That same year, KOKOLO undertook the first of many visits to the U.K., giving European audiences an initial taste of the live energy the band is known for. "My aim" Lugo explains, "was to fuse the socio-political awareness of punk and the confidence of hip-hop with the sophistication of afro-beat, funk, Latin music and beyond - in order to create something unique based on my own experiences". Lugo's music demonstrates a continually evolving ear for song craftsmanship, writing and producing works that owe an equal amount to Fela Kuti and Ruben Blades as they do to The Clash and Hip Hop.

Revolucion! Original Cuban Funk Grooves 1967 - 1978

Right in time for the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution, legendary Bavarian DJ & producer Tom Wieland (7 samurai, panOptikum & les gammas - Compost Records) is coming on strong with his version of the story. 12 lost rare grooves from the vaults of the Egrem/Areito studios in Havanna get, after 5 years of work, a proper reissue at last! Cuba was a late 20th Century anomaly: a Communist government that fostered a vibrant, influential, and essential musical output. Cuban sounds resonate and persist in music throughout Latin America, Africa, Europe, and the United States. In the 1960s and 70s, Cuban music played just as big a role in the development of popular music styles in Central and West Africa as anything coming out of the U.S. or Europe. Tom Wieland, Bavarian music producer & DJ has taken note of the overwhelming response to the funky Cuban tracks he plays in his sets and decided it was time to make some of this elusive music available to everyone, complete with well researched liners and a wealth of background information. If you're into Cuban music beyond Buena Vista, Arturo Sandoval and Celia Cruz, you'll likely recognize some of these names, Juan Formell y Los Van Van, Orquesta Riverside, Juan Pablo Torres, Irakere but you'll likely scratch your head at some others. Tom Wielands new compilation "Revolucion!" digs deep to provide a nice mix of straight-ahead funk and psychedelic experimentation, with frequent hints of more traditional sound. Feliz cumpleanos, Cuba! from the label

¡Gózalo! Vol 1

The original, and still great, compilation of rare, vintage, Peruvian swing from the MAG label. This one features Alfredo Linares Y Su Sonora, Charlie Palomares Y Su Yuboney, Tito Chicoma Y Su Orquesta, Mario Allison Y Su Combo, Silvestre Montez Y Sus Guantanameros and many others. 26 fiery tracks. Highly Recommended.

Brownout | Homenaje

Brownout is an offshoot of the Austin based Latin band, Grupo Fantasma. Fantasma was formed out of two earlier bands, one being avant-garde jazz, the other a funk group with Latin influence. It makes sense then that once the members of Fantasma got the ball rolling, they would want to go for a side project mixing all three. "Homenaje" is Brownout's first, but the band members have been together for a good few years before that, so the album really feels like it was made by a working live band. Though the sounds range from acid-funk (think Sly Stone and Funkadelic) to Latin rock (think Santana, Tortilla Factory, Harlem River Drive), with a little Afro-Cuban and disco thrown in, the whole thing is quite cohesive, and will offer you a garden of delights. As it is a mostly instrumental album, "Homenaje" takes you on a trip like some crazy soundtrack to a Tex-ploitation flick, circa 1974, featuring pimps, playas, bandidos, lowriders, and hippie freaks. It's like as if Al Santiago did one of his Alegre All-Star descarga records but somehow dropped some acid, and Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly" soundtrack got tangled up in the mix. It's all "Brown Wind and Fire" -- fresh horns, funky breaks, with mean piano guajeos galore. Very highly recommended. (Pablo Yglesias)

Quantic Presenta Flowering Inferno | Dog With A Rope

The second album from Quantic Presenta Flowering Inferno, the tropical dub/reggae side project that Quantic introduced to the world with 2008's highly acclaimed 'Death Of The Revolution'. With the Flowering Inferno, Will 'Quantic' Holland brings dub and reggae flavours to the Latin American and African sounds that he has been chasing round the globe since he first started collecting records. He recorded the album in his Sonido Del Valle studio in Cali, Colombia. An album inspired by soundsystem culture but widened out far beyond just reggae and dancehall styles 'Dog With A Rope' is a Tropical soundclash - encompassing a heavy bass and reggae aesthetic alongside the Tropical dance-orientated music from Cuba, Puerto Rico and Colombia. "Writer, producer, DJ, bandleader – Quantic is a man of many talents and many successes." Spinner: "The hottest mother*%er out there!"

Malena | Fried Samba

The Malena production sound comes from the Southpaw Production team of Dan Broad and Chip Wickham. Working out of the infamous Moolah Rouge Studios in Manchester, their production credits include Badly Drawn Boy, Happy Mondays, Doves and I Am Kloot. Both are also experienced session players, having worked with likes of Nightmares on Wax, Aim, Embrace, The Audiowhores, Jimpster and the soundtrack to the Guy Ritchie movie 'Snatch.' Singer/songwriter Susana Montero is most recently known for her work with top UK Latin band RSL (best known for their huge 'Wesley Music' smash), writing and touring with the band for two years. However, she is also one of the UK's top Latin vocalists, with credits that include Tito Puente, Tania Maria, Isaac Delgado, Pichi Valdes (Orchesta Reve), Jesus Alemany (Cubanismo!) and Roberto Pla. An extremely versatile musician, Susana writes in Spanish, English and Portuguese, making her in high demand! The Malena sound has deep Latin grooves, fiery percussion and rich vocal harmonies. Their first release 'Para Ti' quickly established them as a top Latin act, reaching number 1 in the HMV dance chart. Their music is a hardhitting mix of Latin breaks, deep vocal harmonies, barrio soul and Brazil-Electro.'Fried Samba' represents a long road of releases for Malena. Born at the height of Latin House in 2001, Malena has grown from the world of funky Latin house into the darker waters of breaks and beats, still retaining a few hard edges with the production, but with more depth, twists and turns. It's a bit of Salsoul mixed with a Brazilian Cool and a dark slice of Serge Gainsbourg. Although at home in the studio, Malena also has a kick-ass 8-piece band, which has been turning heads and moving feet across the UK!.

Armando Peraza | Wild Thing

Original Release Date: 1968 Still one of the greatest ever to come out of Cuba. If you are a percussionist, you should listen to Armando. (Walfredo Reyes Sr., 1998) This classic '68 Latin soul session features Johnny Pacheco on flute, Chick Corea on piano, Bobby Rodriguez on bass, Cal Tjader on percussion and a host of other notables. Some very cool and swanky stuff here. Austin Powers goes boogaloo. Listen to the groove on "Red Onions." Yeah baby!

Soundway Records Presents The World Ends Afro Rock And Psychedelia In 1970s Nigeria

The World Ends is the latest title from Soundway Records showcasing a wave of guitar driven and psychedelic groups that sprang up in Nigeria during the early 1970s. Featuring 32 electrifying and funk laden grooves, this is the sound of a generation attempting to pick up the pieces after the devastation of the Nigerian civil war. This bumper collection is brimming with youthful exuberance, fuzzed out guitar and cosmic organ vibes and owes much to the psychedelic sounds of Jim Morrison, Santana, Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane and James Brown. As the summer of love was blossoming in London and San Francisco, Nigeria was imploding into civil war. Also known as the Biafra war of 1967, it was a grisly conflict taking over three million lives yet at the same time the country was being pulled apart there was a new world beginning. The tracks featured represent a forgotten chapter in Nigeria's musical history when the youth threw their varied morsels into the pot from hard rock to psychedelic soul when guitars were cherished instruments, symbolic of a new movement, when highlife and Afrobeat played second fiddle to 'the beat'.

Artist Mini Bio: CHOCOLATE ARMENTEROS

The hoo-ha caused by the deserved international success of the trademarked Buena Vista Social Club over the last decade has eclipsed the significance of a number of major US-based Cuban artists. One example is trumpeter Alfredo "Chocolate" Armenteros, a prominent name during the era of Cuban music Buena Vista nostalgia harks back to, and who actually performed with legends such as Septeto Habanero, Arsenio Rodríguez and Beny Moré, among others. He took up residence in New York in 1960, and after working as a sideman with numerous luminaries, including Machito, Larry Harlow, Eddie and Charlie Palmieri, he...more

DJ DWIGHT "CHOCOLATE" ESCOBAR Direct From Australia!

The tracks I chose to place in this playlist are for the dancer, lovers of salsa, from the amateur to the connoisseur. I have the right recipe for the mambo big band fans to the salsa dancer from the barrios and the most exquisite timba for the "reparteros de la Habana." My opening track is "Mambo" from Charanga La Crisis, by my patriot from Venezuela, Geraldo Rosales, followed by Steve Guasch"s "Aqui te traigo sabrosura" just to spell out, nice and clear, what I'm bringing to the elWatusi.com playlist. The third track "La Rumba en casa de Maria," by Sabadonga, is probably the most outstanding salsa hard core band of this season. "La Ley" by La Negramenta a track that i must include, by law! To make the balance perfect I went back to a classic by Roberto Roena "El pueblo pide que toque." Then I chose a block of tracks mainly for the big band lovers which today is called 'mambo," followed by another block for the lovers of the classic straight salsa, including big names like Oscar d' Leon,Tommy Olivencia, and Eddie Palmieri. I"ve finished off with a Timba Cubana block, beginning with one of the protagonists that started the whole movement: Jose Luis Cortez, "El Tosco," followed by two bands that thrive in international timba: Cesar Pedroso "Pupy" and Angel Bonne! Please enjoy your dose of Chocolate... GOD BLESS! PLAYLIST

ANDY HARLOW The Sublime Charanga Sound

Brooklyn's own Andy Harlow grew up in a musical environment. His father, Buddy Harlow, was an accomplished string bassist and Orchestra leader. By the time he was in High School, Andy was already playing woodwinds professionally in the New York City area. Andy attended New York University where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Music Education and a Master's degree in EthnoMusicology. He also received another type of education by paying his dues as a sideman in the orchestras of Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, Ismael Rivera, Xavier Cugat, Machito and Joe Cuba while attending New York University. This eventually landed him a recording contract with Fania/Vaya Records, and a membership in The Fania All Stars super Salsa band. Andy's first LP, "Sopresa La Flauta" contained the monster hit "La Loteria." Three more LP's for Fania produced more hits such as "La Musica Brava", "Tin Tin Deo", "El Campesino"and "No Qe Va a Llorar." 1999 saw the debut of Andy's "La Musica Brava" internet radio show, which can now be heard on Andy's own website. The show attracts a loyal audience of listeners worldwide. Here is Andy's super CHARANGA playlist ...Enjoy! PLAYLIST

R.I.P. PABLO LEBRON, 1937-2010

In memory of the late Pablo Lebron, who had a very direct, unpretentious style that I admired very much. - elW...

R.I.P. Pablo Lebron, the nostalgic voice of 'Los Hermanos Lebron' - Dena Burroughs, L.A. Arts Examiner July 13, 2010 Pablo Lebron, for years the voice of Los Hermanos Lebron (The Lebron Brothers) salsa band, passed away today in Brooklyn, NY. The Lebron Brothers consisted of Jose, Angel, Carlos, Frankie, and Pablo this last one ailed two decades ago by a heart disease that kept him away from performing. The news of this terrible loss for the world of salsa music is of particular interest to the salsa community of Los Angeles as the four performing Lebron Brothers are scheduled to participate in El Festival Colombiano to be held in Pico Rivera just five days from today, on Sunday. Andy Rosillo, one of the festival's organizers, stated that the foursome will be traveling to Los Angeles from Colombia this weekend to perform at the festival despite the terrible news. "There is an outstanding amount of interest, questions, and sadness for a great life that has been lost," said Rosillo, and added that a Mass has been scheduled at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the festival's location to commemorate the life of Pablo, who is tonight mourned all over the world. ...more (plus video)

Fania Newsletter July 2010 - Hector Lavoe, CD Giveaway and more

If you are having trouble viewing this e-mail, please click here to view it in a web browser.

HECTOR LAVOE RELEASES Hector Lavoe was the salsa equivalent of a mercurial rock'n'roll star. It makes sense, then, that tapes of Lavoe's concert recordings have been treasured by collectors worldwide since the singer's untimely death in 1993, at age 46. This month, Fania is re-releasing the official editions of two Lavoe live collections. The first one, Hector Lavoe Live, came out originally in 1998 and is probably the best sounding Lavoe concert in existence. The second one, recorded at a private club during the final chapter of his career, was compiled with the serious salsa aficionado in mind.

The studio albums that Lavoe made for Fania - both as a young vocalist with Willie Colon and as a more mature solo artist in his later years - showcase the purity and swing of the '70s salsa movement at its artistic apex.

Lavoe's concert recordings, on the other hand, underscore two important elements in his music: First, the expertise of his orchestra - which remained proficient and sonically attractive even in those nights when Hector, destroyed by his drug addiction, could barely carry a tune. Second, El Cantante's infectious sense of humor, and his gift for lyrical improvisation.

Desmond Dekker UNRELEASED 7 inch, Lee Perry and more

Summer’s in full swing and we hope you are all enjoying the weather and listening to lot’s of Jamaican music. Here at Trojan Records we have lots of exciting news and releases to update you on, including news of an ultra-limited edition unreleased Desmond Dekker track on 7”, a Lee Perry collection proving the man’s genius, and 2 more releases with loads of tracks on CD for the first time!

 SIPPLE OUT DEH!

This summer sees the release of the long-awaited collection of Lee 'Scratch' Perry productions from the famed Black Ark years of the mid-to-late seventies. SIPPLE OUT DEH! features 44 seminal tracks that originally saw issue as 7" singles in Jamaica, with many sizable hits both on the island and the UK. Also included are a number of rarer items, including Mikey Dread's Home Gard, which makes its CD debut.

 TROJAN 7"

To be launched this summer is a new strictly limited edition 7" vinyl series of rare and previously unreleased recordings, performed by some of the best-known names in the catalogue.

Each disc is to be manufactured using only the best quality heavyweight vinyl and will be presented in a numbered Trojan bag, with only 250 of each title pressed up.

Kicking off the range will be the previously unreleased Desmond Dekker & The Aces double-header, SENTIMENTAL REASONS b/w SUGAR AND SPICE, recorded late in 1968 for Leslie Kong's Beverley's Records months before he achieved international success with Israelites

Watch this space... we'll let you know first when they're available.

 NEW 2CD SETS

July also sees the release of the next two collections in the recently launched genre-themed 2CD sets. The first is a collection of rare and sought-after tracks from the late sixties and seventies, performed by many of Jamaica's best-loved female acts, including Marcia Griffiths, Judy Mowatt, Dawn Penn, Doreen Schaeffer and Hortense Ellis.

Entitled MELODY LIFE - TROJAN SISTERS, the compilation includes numerous recordings that have been unavailable for decades, with all but three making their debut on Trojan CD. Among these are two Candy McKenzie recordings cut for Lee 'Scratch' Perry at Black Ark in 1977 that have remained unavailable since the original date of issue. Yet, despite the scarcity of the material, the music is of the highest order, ensuring this is one of the finest collection of female Reggae ever to see issue.

STAND AND GIVE PRAISE - TROJAN ROOTS brings together 40 Roots classics from the genre's heyday, written and performed by many of its greatest protagonists, and produced by some of its most influential creators. Chronologically compiled, the collection provides a fascinating history lesson in the development of the style and Jamaican music throughout this period - and with almost every track making the debut on Trojan, it is undoubtedly set to be one of the most significant compilations of classic Reggae of 2010.

 TROJAN ORIGINALS

Another two classic Reggae albums are to be made available on CD from 26th July.

First off is the Upsetters' skinhead favourite, THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UPSETTERS, which finally sees issue on CD some 40 years after its original release.

Produced by Tony Cousins and Bruce White, with the able assistance of the Upsetter, the collection was cut during the group's UK tour in 1970 and includes a number of tracks that appear on CD for the first time ever.

The other title to receive a long overdue overhaul is Max Romeo's classic album, WAR INA BABYLON, the Lee 'Scratch' Perry collection that marked the producer's association with Island Records in 1976.

Both releases faithfully maintain the look and sound of the original vinyl albums, with original analogue quarter-inch tapes used for mastering and the sleeve artwork faithfully reproduced.

elWatusi eNews: New Music This Week

Welcome to the elWatusi eNewsletter Nº 7 for August 03, 2010. • become a fan on Facebook • follow us on Twitter • us with friends • bookmark our blog

BIG BUZZ: The way we see it, the major labels are completely out of touch with their customers, and the big, chilly, MP3 monster sites could care less about what they are peddling. It's no wonder this industry is in dissarray. Well, folks, we want you to feel good about the music business again. Here's a place where the shop is run by true fans of the music, not by accountants and marketers who count clicks and coin. Our goal is to provide an inviting home: a place to discover great new music and to reconnect with music you always loved. Just like record shops use to be. (If you are too young to remember what that was like, go rent the DVD High Fidelity.) So feel good about your music: don't steal it. Buy it legally from folks who are on your team, and support the artists and labels who work very hard to make a living in the arts. As always, if you think we can do something better, tell us! We'd love to hear from you! - elW Onward! What a great week for music. We begin with two top Cuban titles: a timba by Son del Indio, a/k/a Sixto Llorente, and an amazing charanga by the legendary Orquesta Sensación. That's followed by some classics from Son Primero and Yambú, both from the great Montuno label, and then a batch of other gems from Orlando Marín, Jack Costanzo and Gerrie Woo, more from Hector Rivera, Joe Cuba, Chakachas (remember their huge 1972 Latin disco hit Jungle Fever?) We're delighted to have the hot new Bobby Cruz and more back-catalog from Lucas Van Merwijk & The Cubop City Big Band. We have a great new Playlist from our Colombian connection, DJ El Chino, and a suite of new Artist Mini Bios (Cheo Feliciano, Azuquita, La India de Oriente) from John Child top it off. Read on...

SON DEL INDIO | Lo que sucede conviene

Fiery timba-salsa doesn't get much better when fronted by Sixto Llorente, the popular Cuban singer. As the former lead singer for Manolito y su Trabuco, Llorente is no newcomer to the Cuban timba. This guy has performed with Tumbao Habana, Pupy Pedroso, Alexander Abreu and countless other top, hard-driving timba orchestras. The new project was produced by Aysar Hernandez, collaborator with Elio Reve, and it's a timba-lovers must-have.

ORQUESTA SENSACIÓN | Soy Sensación

Ooph! What a pristine charanga release, replete with groove, drive, sabor and funk. The venerable Cuban charanga orchestra returns. I love the way these great Cuban orchestras never die, they morph a bit, adding new blood over time. But the core, the soul, of these great orchestras remain in tact. Rolando Valdés started this much-respected charanga band in the '50s. Abelardo Barroso (1905-1972) took the reins in 1955, and it has remained one that others are compelled to emulate - they're the real deal. The sound on this album is phenomenal. The band is currently led by Víctor Rodríguez Herrera Fernández, who keeps the Sensacion flame burning brighter than ever. This one is a no-brainer: a big DJ Alert for those wanting the true Cuban musical spirit. Highly Recommended.

SON PRIMERO | Charanga

CONTRIBUTOR COMMENTS: "I have long treasured this recording, which was produced by Rene Lopez and timbalero/leader Charlie Santiago. The title speaks for itself, and the production features luminaries such as pianists Oscar Hernandez and the late Jorge Dalto, flautist Dave Valentin and violinist 'Pupi' Legaretta. Watch out for 'Pide Que Lo Toque' and ' El Avance.'" (Vicki Solá) "This is a fabulous 1987 charanga disc with plenty of free blowing from the various luminaries present. Flutist Dave Valentin sounds superb, as does Pupi Legaretta (violin), the late great lyrical Jorge Dalto (piano), Charlie Santiago (timbales) and the very talented Oscar Hernandez (piano on some of the cuts). It's very exciting charanga in a modern context. Dave Valentin is in his true element. He has never sounded better. Why not record another one?" (Jose Rizo) "A New York version of progressive Cuban charanga sound. An all star line-up featuring Jorge Dalto on piano and the flute playing of Dave Valentin is outstanding." (Raul Rico)

YAMBU | Yambu

Great mid-seventies salsa and Latin soul release produced by veteran ring-leader Al Santiago. Led by bassist Ramon Rodriguez and directed by pianist Milton Hamilton. Lead vocals by Rafy Puente with additional vocals by Lessette and Caty Wilson on the track "Sunny." Izzy Cano Davila and the great Nestor Sanchez on coro.

LA SANGRE CALIENTE | La Sangre Caliente

Obscure early '70s Latin rock and soul out of Mexico. Very garage, very funky, with touches of psychedelia. Listen to the way cool "Sin Depender De Nadie." Heavy Hammond organ sound peppered throughout. Also, touches of soul, funk and boogaloo. Nice!

BOBBY CRUZ | Alma, Tierra y Raices: Para la História...

Now here's an unexpected gift of salsa gold: a new release by the legendary veteran singer. For those of you who might not know, the team of Richie Ray and Bobby Cruz was one of salsa's greatest forces from the late '60s, '70s and '80s and even through, well, today if you count their recent, highly successful, reunion concerts. Individually they have produced some pretty good material, some of which has been Christian themed (Cruz has been a minister for many years). However, with Alma, Tierra y Raices, we now have a new secular release, devoted exclusively to the religion of Salsa, that somehow recaptures the vitality and pure salsa heat of their best heyday work like Sonido Bestial. Now that's something. Producer and musician Victor "Papo" Ortiz has produced a modern project with firm roots in classic salsa dura of the Fania years. The 73 year old Bobby Cruz still has it. Listen to the audio clips folks, I kid you not -- this guy is fabulous. Check out Para Colombia and you will hear the unmistakable, signature voice of Bobby Cruz in full capacity. You'll be happy to know that Richie Ray shows up for the session: listen to his chops on Modongo de Guimo. Another notable guest is the legendary electric violinist Alfredo de la Fe. Listen to his composition Cuba y Puerto Rico ...a salsa-charanga gem. Just listen to the jewel-in-the-crown El Chivo de la Fiesta. A track that, played at the right volume (high) will be sure to fill any dance floor. Spot on. Ok, folks, don't let this one slip by. A DJ Alert, and Highly Recommended.

ORLANDO MARÍN AND HIS ORCHESTRA | Que Chévere, Vol. II

Original Release Date: 1964
**Classics Revisited** This was timbalero Marín's follow-up to the hit Se Te Quemo La Casa (1962 on Alegre). In my opinion Que Chevere Vol. II is even stronger than its predecessor. Some aficionados regard the album as ahead of its time. It has a wonderfully diverse programme, ranging from the driving mambo "Que Chevere", a favourite of the jazz dance crowd, to the Latin jazz instrumental "Llegue". Uncharacteristically for an Alegre production when Al Santiago was co-owner of the label, he deviated from his avowed policy of crediting the musicians and only names the lead singers. But what a star cast to boast about: Willie Torres, Elliot Romero, Chivirico Dávila and Cheo Feliciano! I asked Al in 1995 if he could remember the sidemen, and all he told me was that the four-trumpet section featured Alfredo "Chocolate" Armenteros on first trumpet and solos; Walter Gene Jefferson played sax; Paquito Pastor was on piano and Tito Jiménez (a.k.a. Tito Jay) was on percussion. Cheo shines on the Marín penned son montuno "Casera Ten Cuida'o". It's just a shame that the number is faded out at 2:52. Chivirico smokes on the mambo "El Loco" written by Jiménez. Pastor takes a brief solo on "Que Mujer", another son montuno composed by Marín and sung by Torres. Marín's self-penned mambos "El Timbalero" and "Besitos De Caramelos" showcase his prowess as a percussionist, as does the guaguancó "Tiene Saoco" written and sung by Chivirico. For the execution of Marín's composition, "Que Chevere", the group is augmented by soloing from an unknown flautist and climaxes with an outstanding 'bone solo. Barry Rogers? The trumpets are replaced by vibes and flute on "Meche", a charming instrumental written by Pastor. Finally, Pastor's mambo composition "Llegue" provides the setting for solos from Jefferson on sax, the bass player and trombonist. Don't hesitate; buy it! Highly recommended. (John Child)

JACK COSTANZO & GERRIE WOO | Latin Percussion with Soul

Original Release Date: 1968
**Classics Revisited** Jack Costanzo, a.k.a. Mr. Bongo, was signed to make this one-off album for Tico Records after the label's A & R man Pancho Cristal saw him perform with a seven-piece group at the El San Juan Hotel in Puerto Rico. Cristal hired the talented New York-based pianist, composer, arranger, bandleader and producer Héctor Rivera (1933-2006) to arrange the songs he and Jack selected for the project. However, when Héctor arrived in Los Angeles to conduct the recording date by Jack's approximately 14-piece ensemble, he had only arranged his own compositions and none of the agreed selections. An enormous row ensued, but the session went ahead under Héctor's direction and Jack admits to this day that he was "a marvellous arranger". Personnel include Costanzo regulars Eddie Cano on piano and trumpeter Paul López (who clocked-up seven albums with Mr Bongo) together with former La Sonora Matancera bass player Humberto Cané. It is more than likely that Tico were hoping to emulate Joe Cuba's 1966 pop and R&B chart success with Latin Percussion With Soul, but it didn't happen. Jack's wife at the time, Gerrie Woo, sings on the most dispensable of the dated crossover tracks. There are only three, or possibly four of these, the rest of the material comprises of swinging mambos and fusion a la Mongo replete with solos and a guajira; the highlights being the Héctor Rivera compositions "Recuerdos", "Mambo Jack", "Mantequilla" and "Que Vengo Acabando", Booker T's "Green Onions" and the Nat Adderly standard "Jive Samba". Jack remade "Mantequilla" and "Jive Samba" for his 2001 CuBop debut album Back from Havana and "Green Onions" for the 2002 follow-up Scorching The Skins. Recommended. (John Child)

HECTOR RIVERA Y SU ORQUESTA | ...Y Vuelve (The Return)

This is a very good early '70s New York salsa release by with excellent vocals provided by Mike Ruiz, Louis Rodriguez and Julian LLanos. Deep, rich dance grooves throughout this one, with compositions by Curet Alonso, Justi Barreto, Javier Vazquez, Frank Grillo "Machito," Frank Dominguez as well as Hector Rivera. Recommended.

JOE CUBA SEXTET | Hecho y Derecho (Doin' It Right)

Original Release Date: 1973 EDITORIAL: I have always loved the feel and energy of Joe Cuba's salsa cuts. The "soulful" English tunes can be goofey and, at times, too preachy for my taste, but others might appreciate the campiness. It's a good thing the ratio is typically 4 to 1 in favor of the Spanish cuts, and Hecho y Derecho contains the classic "Ariñañara." - elW

CHAKACHAS | Jungle Fever

The Chakachas were a Belgian based group of Latin soul studio musicians. Also known as 'Les Chakachas' or 'Los Chakachas', they were formed by band leader Gaston Bogaert, ex-Los Juano Boengs and The Continentals, percussion (conga and tumba); Tito Puente's singer wife Kari Kenton, vocals and maracas; Vic Ingeveldt (a Dutchman from Liege), saxophone; Charlie Lots, trumpet; Christian Marc, piano; Henri Breyre, guitar and backing vocals; and Bill Raymond, bass guitar. All were native to Schaarbeek (a district of Brussels), or nearby Charleroi, Willebroek and Liege. They started out in the late 1950s, and had a Belgian #1 in 1958 with "Eso es el amor", which was sung in Spanish. In 1959 they recorded "Rebecca" (a.k.a. "Rebekka") which featured in the film The Battle of Algiers. In 1962, they crept into the UK Singles Chart for the first time with "Twist Twist", which reached #48. Although they issued numerous recordings, they are best remembered as a one-hit wonder for their hit disco single "Jungle Fever" from 1972, which sold over one million copies in the United States, and was awarded a gold disc by the R.I.A.A. in March 1972.2 It also reached #8 in the US Billboard Hot 100. In the UK it fared less well: despite some airplay soon after release it was later banned by the BBC, which took exception to the song's moaning and heavy breathing. It peaked at #29. - Roberts, David (2006). British Hit Singles & Albums (19th ed.) - Murrells, Joseph (1978). The Book of Golden Discs (2nd ed.).

TITO RODRIGUEZ | Tito No. 1

CONTRIBUTOR COMMENTS: "One of the greatest singers of Latin music, who, over his career, had a prolific output of recordings. This is one of my favorites from this legend and, as is the case with Puente, any and every recording by Tito Rodriguez is worth having." (Raul Rico)

D.O. MISIANI, SHIRATI JAZZ | The King Of History - Classic 1970s Benga Beats From Kenya

From the late 60s through the 70s and right up to his death in 2006, Daniel Owino Misiani dominated the world of benga, the idiosyncratic, hypnotically involving music of the Luo-speaking people of Kenya that's now embraced throughout the nation. With its catchy intros and alluring vocals countered by seemingly frenetic guitar patterns that develop over a fabulously active bass, it's not difficult to hear where the attraction lies. This album catches Misiani and his band, Shirati Jazz, at their peak -- the crucial years when their series of hits defined the classic benga sound.

LUCAS VAN MERWIJK & THE CUBOP CITY BIG BAND | The Machito Project

An extremely true-to-form tribute to one of the great original Latin big bands. This project swings from beginning to end. Even the mixing sounds original. This production from the Netherlands reminds us that true beauty never dies. Well done, indeed.

LUCAS VAN MERWIJK & THE CUBOP CITY BIG BAND | Live In The Hague

Our favorite Netherlander, Mr. Van Merwijk is back with this smokin' live recording that actually does justice to the work of Benny More and other illuminaries. Simply put, this is a terrific, energy filled release that is a must-have for your dance collection. Trumpeter Chocolate Armenteros guests. Should not be missed.

LUCAS VAN MERWIJK & THE CUBOP CITY BIG BAND | Moré & More

EDITORIAL: A great salsa number, out of the Netherlands, that pays tribute to the great sonero, Benny More.

Artist Mini Bio: CHEO FELICIANO

Cheo Feliciano came to prominence as the lead singer of the Joe Cuba Sextet from 1957 to 1967, recording albums with the group for the Mardi Gras, Seeco and Tico labels. However, he fell prey to drug addiction and went into personal decline. His only recorded output during this period were sessions with the Cesta All-Stars, Eddie Palmieri and Monguito Santamaría. In 1969 he admitted himself to the Hogar Crea drug rehabilitation centre in Puerto Rico for about three years treatment. While in rehab, Cheo signed with Fania's subsidiary Vaya label, and much to his surprise, his 1971 solo debut Cheo was a runaway success. Witness to the contract was Catalino "Tite" Curet Alonso (1926-2003), who co-produced and wrote most of the project, including the hits "Anacaona" (the single sold over 140,000 copies), "Mi Triste Problema" (the single was no. 1 in New York...more

Artist Mini Bio: AZUQUITA

After leaving his native Panama in 1966, singer and composer Azuquita recorded with Roberto Roena, Kako, the Salsa All-Stars and Cortijo between 1966 and 1969 before recording two solo albums on small labels in the early 1970s. He joined the Fania stable in 1975 and in addition to releasing two solo albums on Vaya, recorded with Kako on Alegre, Louie Ramírez on Cotique and made two albums with Típica 73 on Inca. Believing he had completed his commitment to Fania, Azuquita relocated to Paris in 1979. However, the label contacted him in 1980 to inform him that he owed them an album. He said he would only comply if he could record with the big band of Tito Puente, who, being aware of Azuquita's popularity in Paris, jumped at the chance...more

Artist Mini Bio: INDIA DE ORIENTE

Singer Luisa María Hernández (1920-2006) had just turned 60 when the phenomenal success of the SAR label briefly revived her career in the 1980s. Born in El Cobre, in the province of Cuba formerly known as Oriente, she became "La India de Oriente" at the beginning of the 1940s. She worked in radio and TV and performed with names like Trío La Rosa, Barbarito Díez, Celia Cruz and Julio Gutiérrez before relocating to the USA in 1960. Recordings she made with Trío La Rosa in Havana between 1949 and 1954 are compiled on Yo Fui La Callejera: Con Trío La Rosa (Tumbao, 2001). She made two albums for the Gema label, Guajiras y Décimas and another with Julio Gutiérrez y sus Guajiros. Between 1980 and 1982 Luisa María recorded three wonderful albums for the SAR sister label Guajiro, ¡Desde El Cobre Con Amor!, La India de Oriente and Buenos Dias Africa, and sang lead vocals on one track in SAR All Stars Interpretan A Rafael Hernández '81 on SAR. Her final outing was La Reina de la Guajira '85 on the SAR descendant...more
