It saddens me to announce that one of the greatest percussionist in the Latin music has passed away this morning. Ray Barretto, a true pioneer to salsa and Latin jazz was 76. Ray Barretto was without a doubt in a league of its own. Though I got the opportunity to meet him, it was very brief at the Jazz cafe where we performed and it breaks my heart.

I am sure you all have a great respect for a Latin musical leader like Ray Barretto. although his era will never be repeated, he inspired many like myself to write and perform the music style that they made great, Salsa.

Fania is an icon for many a salseros still today. I for one grew up listening to the salsa that was performed by all the Salsa recorded by the galaxy of stars that era produced. Long live Salsa.

People like Ray Barretto will always live in the hearts of us all.

Murió el percusionista Ray Barretto, leyenda de la salsa y el jazz latino

Ex integrante de la 'Fania All Stars', murió a los 76 años tras sufrir complicaciones por una cirugía de corazón practicada a finales de enero.

Barretto había sido operado en el Hospital de la ciudad de Ridgewood (Nueva Jersey) para destaparle una obstrucción en las válvulas coronarias.

El procedimiento intentaba combatir la pulmonía que le detectaron, luego de que el 19 de enero pasado sufrió un ataque de asma y fue llevado de emergencia al hospital.

A estos problemas cardíacos se le sumaron complicaciones renales. Según informó en su momento su esposa Annette Rivera, la hemorragia interna produjo efectos severos en hígado y riñones y el artista fue sometido a diálisis.

El ataque de asma le sobrevino justo después de recibir un homenaje de la Asociación de Educación del Jazz en el Hotel Hilton, de Nueva York. En esa ocasión, hace cerca de un mes, fue nombrado 'Maestro del Jazz', máxima distinción de este estilo que antes sólo había ganado otro latino: el saxofonista cubano Paquito D'Rivera.

Barretto estuvo nominado en la reciente entrega de los Premios Grammy, en la categoría de álbum de jazz latino, cuyo galardón recayó en manos de Eddie Palmieri.

El conguero mayor

Ray Barretto nació el 29 de abril de 1929 en Nueva York (más exactamente en Brooklyn). Hijo de padres puertorriqueños, creció en los 'guettos' latinos de East Harlem y el Bronx.

Su formación musical se dio escuchando la radio en la época de los grandes del swing, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, entre otros. Sólo pudo seguir los pasos de estos gigantes cuando regresó del servicio militar en 1949 y aprendió a tocar las congas. Desde entonces se le conoció como 'Manos duras' ('hard hands').

Fue percusionista con la orquesta de Tito Puente (1957-1961) y luego, en 1962, lanzó su propio grupo con el célebre álbum 'Charanga Moderna', que incluía el corte 'El watusi', la primera canción latina que entró en la lista de las 20 más vendidas de la revista Billboard.

“Si tuviera que definir cuál es mi identidad, lo haría diciendo que mi identidad es simplemente ésa, haber tenido el privilegio de conocer a Tito Puente y Charlie Parker”, anotó hace poco el percusionista al diario 'La Prensa' de Nueva York.

Sin embargo en esta década el triunfo comercial le fue esquivo hasta cuando firmó con el sello Fania en 1967 y entró a formar parte de la 'Fania All Stars'.

Alcanzó la inmortalidad en 1975 cuando lanzó su álbum titulado 'Barretto', en el que contaba con la voz de Rubén Blades y Tito Gómez. El disco le representó una nominación a los Premios Grammy en 1976.

Luego de tres años en los que se dedicó más a la fusión con el jazz que a la salsa, regresó al sello Fania en 1979 y se reunió con Adalberto Santiago para lanzar la 'salsa progresiva'.

En 1983 y 1988 realizó dos trabajos con Celia Cruz, el último de los cuales (Ritmo en el corazón) ganó el Premio Grammy en 1990.

A partir de 1989, Barreto entra en la onda de la salsa erótica con su álbum ‘Irresistible’.

Hasta sus últimos días, Barreto se mantuvo activo y ofrecía conciertos con regularidad en Nueva York, llevando siempre colgadas del cuello dos congas en miniatura. Con su sexteto actuó en dos ocasiones en España, en Madrid y Galicia.

Tras cerca de tres años después de su debut discográfico, el grupo catalán Sin Papeles reaparece en la escena musical con Duermes?, un disco que revitaliza el ska-reggae-rock nacional a través de catorce canciones nuevas . Letras llenas de denuncia social mediante el humor y la ironía y su especial visión de la música, como foco de unión de ritmos enraizados en el ska, el reggae, el funk… hacen de este nuevo trabajo de estudio la consolidación definitiva de la banda. La producción artística y la dirección musical corre de la mano de Tony López y Marisa Martín, productores de su primer disco Traumas Infantiles y de otros artistas como por ejemplo Ska-p al que Sin Papeles ha acompañado en alguna de sus giras tanto nacionales como internacionales. El resultado final ha sido un sonido con la fuerza propia del directo y la perfección que confiere el estudio. La edición del disco ha sido realizada por Sin Papeles Records, sello discográfico de la propia banda, que pertenece a la Plataforma de Autoeditores (PAE), de la que además son los fundadores. En esta ocasión, Sin Papeles ha contado con la colaboración de Dani Macaco, voz en el tema Operación Jeto, Begoña Bang-Matu, que presta su voz en Globaliza 2000; Xavier Turull de Ojos de Brujo, cajón en Que Vengan y Operación Jeto; Daniel Figueras, guitarra española en Que Vengan y el acompañamiento de percusión, a lo largo de todo el disco, de Sandro Lustosa de Macaco. Una vez más los componentes de Sin Papeles han conseguido en Duermes?, mediante canciones como 619, Drogadicto legal, Alístate o El Picapiedra, sorprender con una mezcla perfecta de estilos, donde el buen rollo y la buena música, sólo conseguida si hay buenos músicos al frente, son la base fundamental. Un sonido que se ha convertido en firma del grupo.

As most of you already know, the legendary Ray Barretto passed away on February 17th. Ray was a true giant, and will be missed by not only those who knew him, but by the many thousands who followed his long and illustrious career in jazz and salsa.

Many of Ray's loyal fans have been asking for a list of his titles that are currently available. The following link will return this list, but please note that many of the Fania titles are in extremely limited supply. We do know that several labels are working on definitive compilations, and also that the new Fania will be hard at work producing reissues of the Barretto legacy. No Respect from Göttingen Germany started off as a pure Punk Rock band in 1985. Today they’re playing a mixture of Ska and Punk. During the time they published four CD’s and several other recordings.They played tons of gigs including a tour through Italy and one through Spain.The Brass section consists of a Sax, trumpet and a trombone, the rhythm section consits of the well known members bass, drums and guitar. The lyrics wich are dealing with political and also personoal and emotional topics are very important to the band. These lyrics are combined with a powerful but never unmelodical sound the reason which are making NO RESPECT a band worth listening to.

DOWN & AWAY TO SERVE & PROTECT CD OUT NOW

The swedish punkband Down and away started in 1998 after the breakups from other bands. Down and away was formed by David, Marcus and Cupless, who had known eachother since playground. In 2002 Cupless dropped out from the band and the stand in-baseplayer was The face (Saibon, The Pricks) who later became a full member of the band. After a couple of demos Down and away released their first album "Whos´s got the deliverance!?" on Rockstar records in 2001. The band did a couple of europetours and released thir second album "Set to blow" in 2004 on Rockstar Records. Between the fullength releases a MCD and a couple of singles got released. Since 2001 the band have done around 100-150 shows around Europe and have started to make themselves a name i the punkscene.

A new album was recorded in december 2005 and will be out in spring 2006, and as usual they deliver a sing along fiendly album with alot of energy.

Down and aways music can be described as hardhitting streetpunk with alot of catchy melodies. Infuences are both old and new bands such as Rancid, Ramones, Johnny cash, Social distortion, Stiff little fingers.

NAZIDEMONSTRATION 25th of March in Gütersloh

Attack on Cable-street-Beat-strictly antifascist Gütersloh, BRD

You know us, for several years we fight fascists now, we live and organize our way of live- skin and punk culture. We live the spirit of 69. Cable street beat-strictly antifascist was created because the fascists polluted our subcultural athmosphere. We are about 10 groups in Germany now, and we are growing. It all started in Gütersloh, a quite small town in the middle of Gemany, a town with a long punk and skin tradition. We organize concerts, ska and soul niters, we publish low-price cd-compilations, the Skatalites, Inciters, Hotknives, Rude and Visser, Scrapy, the Angelic Upstarts, Attila the Stockbroker, Terror, Shelter, Prowlers, Klasse Kriminale, Los Fastidios are only some of the bands we worked together with.

But that is not all we do: We invade fascist marches, close fascist shops, we fight them in the stadiums, pubs and on the streets.

Now the fascists talk about „revenge". They are planning a demonstration for march, the 25th of march in Gütersloh. The way they want to walk is 6 kms long. The demonstration is planned to begin at 12.00 and last until 22.00. Maybe they want to organize a fascist concert with one of their really bad nazi hardrock bands, who call themselves „OI" bands. This would naturally provoke ear cancer........ The alternative this evening is our SKA concert with „Scrapy" from Bavaria and „Skarface" from France. This concert starts at about 22.00, so we guess, the fascists will try to attack the concert. Ok, we don`t think, they will reach the location.

Now to something completely funny! They say, the reason for this demonstration was the fact, that migrants, left winged militants and -Skinheads had built a „No go area" for „national thinking young Germans" in Gütersloh. Hurray! At last the fascists understand, that there is no way of beeing fascist AND skinhead! You are either a skinhead- or a nazi with short hair, just a bloody bonehead. Thank you, this will help us in the future.....

Ok, we know, they are cowards, and we recognized, we did not see too many of them in our town, but we did not know, that we were this succesfull!!!

Now, fascists, we have a really good idea for you. We will show you, what a real „no-go-area" means!

The fascists want to start their „March" at the Gütersloh station. We deceided, they will not leave it! We will block this station, together with everybody, who does not want to see this scum in our town.

Everybody is invited to support us. Visit boring Gütersloh, stop a fascist march, skank with scrapy and skarface and visit a football match on sunday. It will be possible, to find a place to sleep if you arrive with a sleeping-bag, even, if you arrive on friday. Please inform us, if you want to come, write an e-mail to info@cable-street-beat.de . Viele von Euch haben sicherlich schon von uns gehört. Seit etlichen Jahren kämpfen wir gegen Rassismus und Faschismus in der Punk und Skinhead Kultur, unserer Kultur. Nicht, weil wir das so gerne machen, oder weil wir große Politiker und Politikerinnen sind, sondern aus drei Gründen. Erstens, weil Nazis sowieso doof sind, zweitens, weil wir mit diesen Idioten weder feiern wollen noch können, und drittens, weil sie unseren wunderbaren Kult zerstören. Kurz gesagt, sie sind einfach lästig.

Also gab es zwei Gründe, CSB zu gründen, der eine war, Konzerte und Niter zu nach dem „do it yourself" Prinzip zu veranstalten, um das zu tun, was sich für Skins und Punks gehört, nämlich Spaß haben und bereiten. Der zweite war und ist, Nazis zu bekämpfen, wo immer sie auftauchen. Das haben sie scheinbar auch gemerkt. Ihr erinnert Euch bestimmt an unsere netten kleinen Aktionen wie die Unterwanderung und hoffnungslose Verwirrung etlicher Nazi-Demonstrationen inklusive beschützender Polizisten oder die Schließung von Nazi-Läden durch eine nette kleine Aktion zusammen mit Bikern an der Brocker Mühle.(Alles nachzulesen auf www.csb-gt.de ,oder er-googeln)

Und deshalb rufen sie zu einer Pups-Demonstration unter dem großartigen Titel- „den linken mainstream stoppen- für ein nationales Jugendzentrum" oder so ähnlich-dämlich auf.

Großartig ist allerdings die inhaltliche Begründung: sinngemäß: kriminelle ausländische Jugendbanden, linksextreme Gewalttäter und, warte mal.... ach ja, SKINHEADS haben nämlich in unserer schönen kleinen Stadt ein Klima geschaffen, in dem sich national „denkende" Volksgen.. äh, Jugendliche nicht mehr auf die Straße trauen können. Aha, „befreite Zone" mal anders!

Na so was! Und wir dachten schon, es gebe sie hier gar nicht mehr, dabei müssen sich die armen kleinen Nazilöffelchen im Schutz der Dunkelheit von Hauseingang zu Hauseingang schleichen, oder nehmen sie gar die Kanalisation? Immer in Angst vor den bööööösen, großen Skinheads, den blutgierigen Linksextremisten und den mordlustigen 14-jährigen aramäischen alevitischen oder gar türkischen Jungs, die vor dem (in Gütersloh eigentlich nicht existenten) Mac Doof abhängen....... Jaja, ein hartes Leben hat man so als Versuchsnazi. Und da sie sich ja offensichtlich alleine nicht auf die Straße trauen, haben sie jetzt ihre großen Freunde aus dem großen Ruhrgebiet und dem noch größeren Hamburg und noch so ein paar andere sogenannte Kameradschaften zur Hilfe gerufen, um es uns mal so richtig zu zeigen. Jawohl, einmal doll lange in Gütersloh auf die Straße gehen dürfen, das wärs, so als arme, verfolgte kleine Naziminderheit. Um das auszukosten, haben sie dann mal vorsichtshalber am 25.3 von 12 bis 22.00 eine Demonstration angemeldet, die am Bahnhof starten und sechs Km lang sein soll. Also bitte, 10 Stunden für sechs Kilometer, so kann man nun wirklich noch nicht mal einen kleinen Krieg gewinnen. Also entweder sind die fußkrank, sie wollen ein Nazikonzert nebenbei durchziehen (aua, ich krieg Ohrkrebs!) oder so lange brauchen, bis unser SKA Konzert mit Scrapy und Skarface anfängt, um es dann uneingeladenerweise zu besuchen.

Der ernste Teil!

Aber all das wird natürlich nicht passieren, da wir mit ganz vielen Leuten den Bahnhof blockieren werden, damit die Nazis keine 50 Meter, am liebsten keinen Fußbreit weit kommen.

Wenn es ihnen gelingen sollte, zu marschieren, vor unseren Zentren und privaten Wohnhäusern Kundgebungen durchzuführen, werden sie in nächster Zeit sicherlich sehr viel offensiver auch in unserer Stadt agieren.

Das werden wir verhindern. Insgesamt stellt diese faschistische Demo nicht „nur" einen Angriff auf Migranten und Migrantinnen, sondern auch auf Cable-Street-Beat-strictly antifascist dar. Wir haben CSB in der BRD gegründet, deshalb versuchen sie hier, quasi in unserer „homebase", uns anzugehen. Um ihnen dies gründlich zu versauen, können wir Eure Hilfe gut gebrauchen.

Wir treffen uns am Willy Brandt Platz vor dem HBF Gütersloh ab neun Uhr, um dort nicht wegzugehen. Nachdem wir mit blockieren fertig sind, feiern wir dann hoffentlich unseren Erfolg abends bei Scrapy und Skarface im „Bauteil 5". Für Übernachtungsmöglichkeiten ab Freitag sorgen wir, meldet euch bitte bei Bedarf unter info@cable-street-beat.de an. Am nächsten Tag könnten wir dann noch in Bielefeld das Oberligaspiel „Fichte" gegen „FCG 2000" ansehen. Beim Hinspiel gab es Angriffe von 30 rechten „Hools" gegen die Fichte Fans. Auch da ist Solidarität angebracht.

La salsera del Bronx confirmó, en entrevista con el programa "Zona Cero" de la emisora radial "Clásica 92", que recibió la oferta de un millón de dólares por parte del Ministro de Cultura de Cuba, Abel Prieto, la semana pasada durante una presentación en Veracruz, México, para un concierto en Cuba que seria grabado para una firma del gobierno..

La cantante puertorriqueña India dijo a la emisora radial citada, que rechazó esta oferta millonaria por respeto a su madrina la fallecida Celia Cruz y el pueblo exiliado cubano.

La India, cuyo nombre real es Linda Bell Caballero, dijo vía telefónica al presentador argentino Javier Ceriani que le "gustaría alegrar" con su música al pueblo cubano, pero aclaró que "no iré" mientras esté el actual régimen de Fidel Castro .

La oferta de la autoridad cultural cubana, según La India, era para participar en los carnavales de julio en Cuba.

La India acaba de lanzar su álbum "Soy diferente", una producción de salsa romántica, y tiene el proyecto artístico de participar en The Singer, la película sobre la vida de Héctor Lavoe que dirige Anthony Felton y protagoniza Raúl Carbonell, hijo.

Home Sweet Home: de retour dans notre bordelais natal après moult péripéties en France, au plat pays et en Allemagne: ce fût bref mais intense..... merci à tous! Moon Hop repart sur les routes très bientôt!!!

Tout récemment, le 16 décembre 2005, MOON HOP a remporté le Tremplin Overlook des Musiques Amplifiéees au Rocksane à Bergerac (24), une salle du réseau FEDUROCK français. On attend le cd live avec impatience....

MOON HOP à l'honneur de faire partie des groupes européens de Ska sélectionnés par les féroces nippons de TOKYO SKA PARADISE ORCHESTRA pour figurer sur la compilation japonaise « The Third Era of Ska » du label JUSTA RECORDS.

Par ailleurs, un BEST-OF de MOON HOP sortira en février 2006 au Japon à partir de morceaux choisis dans leurs deux premiers albums (ça ne s'invente pas!), témoignant de l’intérêt que leur porte les spécialistes de la scène nippone...

LA RDM en Venezuela

La idea nacio de Jose Vicente, nuestro mentor y guia, o como solemos decirle, nuestro presidente. Habia un run run sobre la Revolucion Bolivariana, los avances que en cultura y artes se estaban desarrollando en Caracas y las alusiones a lugares y personajes venezolanos en unas cuantas canciones que son parte de nuestro repertorio de mambo, bolero y chachacha. Habian los contactos y las ganas, habia tambien la experiencia de parte de la gente de la Fundacion Madera y la certeza de encontrar eco con nuestro proyecto en las autoridades revolucionarias de la Alcaldia de Mayor de Caracas y el Ministerio de la Cultura. Asi fue, El Alcalde Mayor, Juan Barreto, y el presidentre del Conac Ivan Padilla Bravo, asumieron de una manera desidida esta aventura. Tambien por la parte francesa contamos con no pocos apoyos. Desde la solidaridad y el espaldarazo de los buenos deseos, hasta el compromiso de la Spedidam para facilitarnos los billetes de avion. Partimos con las piernas temblorosas hacia la aventura y nos encontramos con un pais en efervecencia por el carnaval y por los cambios positivos en la concepcion de un estado y un gobierno que favorece a los desposeidos. Llegamos a Caracas la tarde del 25 de Febrero directamente a alternar con Oscar de Leon en el inicio de las fiestas. Comenzamos con un reves, la via del aeropuerto Simon Bolivar de Maiquetia a Caracas, habia colapsado hacia un mes y la ruta alterna construida contra reloj, seria puesta en en funcionamiento el dia siguiente. De manera que debimos cruzar los dedos y apostar a llegar a tiempo para poder subir a la escena al lado del Sonero del Mundo. Mas a pesar de llegar antes de que el tocara, los organizadores no se arriesgaron a desmontar el tinglado ya armado para su orquesta y debimos regresar un poco tristes a instalarnos en nuestras habitaciones en el Caracas Hilton. Los dias siguientes ya no ocurrio asi. Tuvimos funciones como enumeramos a continuacion -Domingo 26. Camury Chico -Lunes 27. Camury Chico - Miercoles 1ro. El Mani es asi ( descarga) Al lado de Pibo Marquez -Viernes 3 . Rumba Ache (Caracas) - Domingo 5. Barrio Marin, San Agustin del Sur. - Miercoles 8. El Mani es asi - Jueves 9. Recepcion en la Alcaldia Mayor. - Viernes 10. Barrio 23 de Enero. - Sabado 11. Barrio el Cementerio. En cada uno de estos conciertos el publico nos brindo su apoyo y aplauso asi como el agradecimiento por querer estar con ellos en estas celebraciones. Hubo ademas una trasmision en directo el domingo 26, en el canal mas visto, Venezolana de Television, asi como entrevistas en diversas emisoras de radios de gran sintonia nacional e internacional (por la web)invitando a los conciertos, ademas de reseñas en distintos medios impresos. Estubimos rodeados de extraodinarios musicos que igualmente compartieron con gran cariño la escena. Podriamos nombrar en particular, los amigos del Grupo Madera, con quienes compartimos la mayoria de los conciertos y nos prestaron gentilmente sus instrumentos. Pibo Marquez, La Dimension Latina, Manuel Guerra y su orquesta, Hugo Herrera, Martin Mata, La banda Sigilosa, Bailatino, Alfredo Naranjo, Nene, Luis y Roberto Quintero, Un Solo Pueblo y algunos que ahora se escapan. El ron nunca falto, por el contrario cada una de las marcas degustadas, nos dejaron en el paladar y en el animo, ese sabor a fiesta, el sentirnos queridos y en casa. Ser tratados como reyes , a pesar de que somos una republica. La Republica Democratica del Mambo puede declarar sin ninguna duda que nuestras relaciones diplomaticas con la Republica Bolivariana de Venezuela se mantendran firmes desde hoy al infinito.
