THE DRASTICS! Vintage dub reggae & classic dancehall sounds!

THE DRASTCS have set the world a blaze with their unique style of heavy roots dub reggae, taking inspiration from past masters (King Tubby, Lee Scratch Perry, Augustus Pablo) and blending in afro- beat, jazz, hip-hop, dancehall, and R&B. Formed in 2003 from the ashes of rock-steady soulsters The Zvooks, The Drastics quickly made a name for themselves with the release of their 2005 debut album “Premonition”, featuring guest vocalists and musicians from Chicago (Vandell Harris, Prince Gonzalez), Boston (Westbound Train members and Craig Akira Fujita from Pressure Cooker), New York (King Django) and Germany (Dr Ring Ding), giving the album many more flavors than originally expected. “Premonition” even appeared in a top 2005 column in The Beat magazine, and received praise in countless magazines and reggae websites. With their sophomore effort “Chicago Massive”, The Drastics seriously upped the ante with 24 musicians collaborating over a two disc set. Disc One contains hard dubs and instrumental versions of Drastic riddims ranging from roots, rub-a-dub, dancehall, and hiphop/reggae hybrids, while Disc Two features eleven vocalists including Dr. Ring Ding, King Django, Todd Hembrook (Deals Gone Bad), Fada Dugou, Zulu, Corey Dixon, and a host of MCs and vocalists from the Chicago underground. In addition to this, a limited edition 12” DJ vinyl pressing includes extended versions of the six best club tracks from the two-disc set. The Drastics are REAL fine, VERY fine. Arena México presenta Everythings Turns, Everthings Revolves de Juan Pablo Macías.El título de la exposición es tomado de una película de Hans Richter de 1929, en la que el artista vinculado con el movimiento de vanguardia Dada de Zurich, desarrolla una investigación formal de la imagen en movimiento y retrata el vértigo de la vida contemporánea de la segunda década del siglo veinte. Las protagonistas del proyecto expositivo son cuatro video-instalaciones, ideadas o readaptadas para el espacio de la galería: Headbanging with a Camera Attached to my Head (2005-06), Abril 2005, Petardo (2006) y Máquina de escupitajos ll (2005-06). Para Juan Pablo, la imagen en movimiento no es un medio para retratar la realidad, sino solo una parte del encuentro entre los medios de representación y el individuo, en el que la recurrencia al vértigo, o a la anulación de la capacidad de tejer una trama narrativa propia del medio y del ver, se presentan como formas de salida o abandono del sistema de conocimiento implementado por el dispositivo óptico. Los trabajos tienen dos fases, una como producción del documento y la otra como una ocupación y despliegue en el espacio expositivo, en el que cambia su estructura habitual y la forma en que un medio hipernarrativo como el video, se contempla. “Juan Pablo Macías – como escribe Isaac Muñoz - recurre a medios que usualmente narran, la cámara por un lado, y él como elemento de encuentro con el campo de la representación…. Lo que hace…es ubicar componentes de objetivación, la cámara y el individuo, apuntar hacia una serie de relaciones que se dan entre esos dos elementos y jugar con esa fricción para lograr un campo expansivo en el que mediante el defecto adrede de esa relación, se produzca una desarticulación de la objetivación recíproca, y así él desaparece como persona identificada a la vez que la cámara-objeto se fractura y se hace inestable… hay una consecuencia muy interesante en ese proceso, y es que su desaparición provoca una energía inesperada que se intensifica en el espacio que sucede, un tipo de entropía afectiva, a manera de hoyo negro...El trabajo del artista no es un comentario sobre algo, sino que es un acto pragmático, tiene una fuerza de hoyo negro, no se si como práctica artística, pero si como acto político, de defección al poder mediante la entropía afectiva.” Así, con la videocámara fijada a su cabeza, con los escupitajos hacia el ojo de la video cámara, y el petardo que explota a quince centímetros de la videocámara, articula un continuo vértigo desplegado en el espacio expositivo hasta perder la orientación…Acciones que no son actos de representación, sino “hoyos negros”, “encuentros energéticos” con los medios de representación, “actos políticos”, de defección al poder mediante aquello que Isaac Muñoz llama una “entropía afectiva“.

Juan Pablo Macías nace en Puebla en 1974, trabaja como artista y curador entre México e Italia. Entre sus últimas exposiciones como artista se encuentran Qui vive? En el NCCA -National Centre for Contemporary Arts de Moscú; Estetica Della Resistenza en colaboración con Alfredo Jaar para la Fondazione Ratti y ASSAB-ONE de Como y Milán. Individualmente, Daily Staging: video as public topography en Ciocca Arte Contemporánea, Milán (2005) y Simplesmente elas Exalam Galería Leme en Sao Paolo, Brasil. Sus videos han sido invitados a varios festivales y compilaciones internacionales, como Come Closer, Retransmisiones, KO Durban first video festival, entre otros.
